- 1 cup (1/2 lb) salted butter
- 1 lb light brown sugar (about 2 1/4 cups)
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan; set aside.
- Combine butter, brown sugar, flour, and nuts in a large bowl; mix until thoroughly combined. Set aside 1 cup for topping.
- Add egg, applesauce, cinnamon, and baking soda to butter and flour mixture; mix well. Pour into pan and sprinkle with 1 cup remaining topping.
- Bake for 50 minutes. Serve warm as is or topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup (optional). Also tastes great as a cooled cake!
