There's always a bit of an awkward moment when someone asks me, "So what do you blog about?"
Um, I blog about stuff.
I've always felt a little lost without a niche (pronounced "neesh" because it sounds fancier). ITRML isn't a DIY blog, food blog or photography blog. It is more an "explain to me this parenting thing, find food my kids like other than Kraft mac and cheese, announce cool local happenings and share random things that float my boat" blog.
I believe the catch-all phrase for a site like mine is "lifestyle blog" but I prefer "niche-less blog," a term I totally coined all by myself.
And while being niche-less won't get you the big sponsors or proverbial golden ticket (whatever that is—maybe a red carpet correspondent gig?), it does let you write about anything and everything that tickles your fancy. We're talking pictures of double rainbows, middle child issues, top secret homemade roll recipes and the inspiration for Justin Bieber's hair.
It seems a lifestyle blog—I can't type that without giggling—is the perfect fit for someone like me who knows a little about a lot. (I know even less when my kids ask me homework-related questions.) Of course, I wouldn't mind knowing a lot about a little, you know, be an expert in something.
And no, finding great deals on 5-inch stilettos doesn't count.
Until I discover what it is I do really, really well (other than shop), I think I'll take the term "niche-less" and run with it—in 5-inch heels, of course.
