In a world where we’re often made to feel less than we are and terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days wear us down, it’s kind of nice to have someone who’s cheering for us, shouting “GO TEAM!” and “DEFENSE!” and shaking her pom poms.
Wait, that didn’t sound quite right…
Scratch the whole shaking of the pom poms thing; we don’t want any unnecessary injuries.
But seriously. I feel as women we need to be even better about building each other up, boosting self-esteem and being each other’s biggest fan. It’s not always easy. For some reason women seem to be wired with an inclination toward jealousy, a love of gossiping and an inability to quickly forgive.
Not every woman, mind you, but I’d say a good percentage of us. That’s why our world—both online and off—needs a much bigger cheering section with much louder cheerleaders.
I love nothing better than acting as a personal cheerleader for my friends. It’s actually quite easy. Plus, being someone’s biggest fan is really fun. I recommend doing it for the warm fuzzies. They’re awesome. And warm. And fuzzy.
Back to the cheerleading. Here are 10 ways you can be your friends’ personal cheerleader. This list is in no way complete, so feel free to add to it.

10 Ways to Be Your Friend’s Personal Cheerleader**
In no particular order…
- Always wish her good luck before a big event (preferably via a phone call or text—something more personal than Facebook) and then physically cheer her on (pom poms optional) when she participates in said big event (e.g. race, theater performance, book club, bunco night).
- Shout it from the rooftops (figuratively, please) when she does something noteworthy (TV segment, magazine feature, new job, shower before noon).
- Take the time to surprise her with her favorite treat if she lives within driving distance.
- Have long Skype conversations in which you tell her just how awesome she is.
- Validate her feelings when she’s ovulating, PMSing, menopausing or any other hormone-ing.
- Comment regularly on her blog posts (assuming she blogs).
- Tweet about just how cool she is (assuming she’s on Twitter).
- Send her inappropriate Pinterest links or e-cards when she has one of those terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days.
- Send flowers. Some days will require them.
- Make sure she knows you always have her back. Always.
* That’s one of my dad’s favorite jokes, so I had to include it. My dad is pretty awesome at being my cheerleader.
** Not to be confused with a professional cheerleader. My lack of coordination (I constantly run into door frames), lack of flexibility (the only split I can do is related to ice cream) and lack of gorgeous, long hair makes me the opposite of an expert on this subject.
